When parking break is not engaged the thing that stops the car from moving is the parking pawl in the gear box, which is a small pieces that stuck into the gear. It has to hold 2 tons of car and that exerts excessive strain to the transmission.

Replacement can be an expensive operation since it generally requires removing the transmission from the car. It is highly inadvisable to use the parking pawl to stop a vehicle in motion.
When the parking pawl isn't lined up with a groove on the drum, the shift lever won't lock into the "P" detent. If I rotate the output shaft a tiny bit while holding the shift lever against the detent, then it will drop in. Swapping out the shift lever didn't require disassembling any of the parking pawl linkage.

May 14, 2013 · A somewhat common problem is for the overdrive snap ring to break. This causes the output shaft to move slightly and does not allow for proper alignment of the parking pawl. If this is the case, then reverse will stop working soon. Some people also experience a spike in engine speed during the shift into over drive.
"P" is not a parking brake. It puts the transmission in Park. Not the same thing. As others have said, P puts a pawl or pin into a toothed gear in the transmission, locking it. This is not a replacement for using the foot brake. On a car with a manual transmission, would you consider leaving it first gear and not setting the parking brake?

Thats the shift linkage and you'll have to remove the one bolt that holds it onto the rod (10 mm IIRC). If you're talking about the smaller one with the spring on it, thats for the parking pawl. After you removed the shift linkage from the shaft, rotate it clockwise as far as it will go so that the parking pawl rod disengages from the pawl.

The pawl broke and the only way tp get at it to fix it was to tear into the transmission from the front to the rear. The parking pawl / reverse band was the very last thing to come out when dis-assembling the transmission.
Aug 28, 2014 · Bottom left corner of the first pic shows the parking pawl and linkage. The pawl engages the notches on part #594. So all the pieces are steel except for the aluminum case. So hopefully something is just missing or disconnected so you don't need another case.
Well, do use parking brake and if on any incline turn wheels to curb and if it were me I would get a chock, and use it when parked until fixed. there is a thing called a pawl in the transmission, that locks it in Park.

I just got my estimate back from my local John Deere dealer for replacing the parking pawl on a 5420. Now that I have recovered from shock, I can type again. Exactly $6,000! Funny how "miscellaneous charges" made it come out to exactly 6,000. The pawl is $117, all parts together are $519.42, labor $5,200.
