• Aug 04, 2020 · Unless you shoot that Elk at 0-159yds, the 6.5 Creedmoor hits that elk with more energy than a .308. So, if you would shoot an elk past 160 with a .308, you should be able to shoot it with a 6.5 creed. This is the same “stopping power” farce that leads people to believe they should carry a .45 because its bullets are bigger.

  • I would say the effectiveness of the 308 on a deer is farther than most can compensate for drop. Unless a person is either well practiced or useing a scope with range adjusting dials the drop is hard to adjust for. On a 200 yard zero a 308 shooting 150gr bullets starts to drop like a rock at 400 yards. 25in drop at 400 and 53in drop at 500.

We discussed which cow should be my son’s target, ensuring no other cows were behind and there was a backstop for the shot. The youth model Savage .308 cracked loudly.

Mar 22, 2019 · • Is .308 ammo good for shooting long distances? Yes, the .308/ 7.62×51 NATO cartridge is an excellent choice for hitting targets well beyond the 300-yard range. Mar 06, 2008 · Really, in a .308 or .30-06, I wouldn't bother with anything over 150, unless I was going after elk or moose. The 150 is going to be plenty for anything less. Most of the time, I'd rather have the extra velocity that you get with the lighter bullet. That will translate to a flatter trajectory at realistic hunting ranges.

I don’t care how expert a shot Bell was, if his 7x57 could routinely fell Cape buffalo, I’ve a strong hunch the 7mm-08 (which generally shoots 100 fps faster) can terminate an elk, moose, black bear or anything Rich plans to Mann-handle with his overrated 308 Win. Let’s take a closer look at these two cartridges.
Oct 21, 2011 · A: There are many excellent choices for hunting elk in the .308 caliber, and this Federal Fusion is one of the best. It's a bonded bullet design that retains a lot of weight, even in a tough animal like an elk.

So, for deer, big coyote, elk, and even small moose you can use both cartridges with 150- or 165-grain projectiles. If you’re a .308 Winchester diehard and insiste on big game, then get some high quality bullets. Hunters also know that the .308 Win has less recoil than the .30-06, which translates into slightly better accuracy.
Dec 11, 2008 · Basically, concerning 30 caliber this is what they said; 180 for elk up, can be used on a combo deer/elk hunt in a pinch. 165 grain for heavier deer sized game (mule deer, sheep) and elk in smaller calibers, .308 Win. etc. And for long range deer hunting with the magnums. 150 grain for whitetail sized game.
